Biography

Based in London, United Kingdom, Skinshape’s sound has influences from many genres but mostly from US funk and rhythm & blues, 60s folk music, 60s-70s Jamaican reggae, 90s trip-hop, British and US psychedelic music from the 60s, film music, and African music from 60s-70s. Skinshape is Will Dorey, originally from Swanage, Dorset, who is also the co-founder of the reggae label Horus Records and was bassist for the band Palace from 2014-2017.

It all started with Dorey’s love for old music and how it sounded. Captivated by the distinctive feel of '60s production he started experimenting with tape machines as a means to create his own “samples”. Instead of using other people’s music, he started recording the drums himself with a tape machine in around 2012, resulting in everything being original. All elements in Skinshape’s music are recorded by Dorey himself. His beats range from reggae, dub, hip/trip-hop, funk with a strong psychedelic element. Moreover, he never stops exploring new stuff which is evident from how his music evolved through the years: influences from latin music, Indian and Pakistani funky and psychy music, and of course African music.

Skinshape LP is his debut album which he released with Melting Records back in 2014. He, then, released Oracolo in 2015, Life & Love in 2017, and Filoxiny in 2018.
